Facial recognition used by law enforcement has attracted an enormous amount of attention from the press and governments around the world, with some cities banning the tech, and others, like London, pushing ahead. However, in the new COVID-19 world, face masks are interfering with the software, seemingly rendering it redundant. We always recommend that operators of AI take a dynamic approach to their tech (particularly when it is invasive/involves surveillance). It's not enough to just review the algorithms from a fairness, accountability, transparency and privacy perspective before launch; the effects of the tech must always be monitored to ensure those principles are demonstrated in the results, as well as whether the tech is actually effective.
