I'm looking forward to participating in WIPO's Standing Committee on the law of trademarks, industrial designs and geographical indications next week as a representative of MARQUES (The Association of European Brand Owners). There's an interesting topic about whether country names should be rejected as part of the trade mark examination process. Clearly there are a number of successful and legitimate brands consisting of geographic names. Provided they are not descriptive, misleading or deceptive, should they be allowed?
