The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has ruled that protected designations of origin (PDOs) extend to services as well as products themselves. The use of CHAMPANILLO on a tapas bar chain infringed the internationally renowned sign “Champagne,” protected in Europe as a PDO pursuant Regulation no.1308/2013.

The CJEU noted it's not necessary to establish that the products or services are similar but whether a consumer upon seeing the disputed sign/name would produce a link in their minds with the PDO.
